UM Dismantles Diversity Office: Now Is Not the Time to Step Back from Diversity and Inclusion

March 28, 2025

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past two years—and especially in recent weeks—we’ve seen diversity offices dismantled at colleges and universities nationwide in response to changes driven by widespread misrepresentations of the now weaponized and demonized acronym 'DEI' and its role in higher education. The University of Michigan's recent decision to dismantle its Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is deeply troubling—not only because of what it means for that campus and the courageous and successful role it played over 20 years ago to defend race-conscious admissions in higher education before the U.S. Supreme Court, but also because of what it signals across higher education.

Some institutions are citing legal uncertainty or compliance concerns as justification for abandoning diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. But let’s be clear: contrary to gross misrepresentations, advancing opportunities and equity is not illegal. There are legally sound and inclusive ways to continue this work with integrity and impact. Closing diversity, equity, and inclusion offices is a choice—not a requirement.

This decision undermines decades of progress and sends the wrong message to students, faculty, and staff from historically marginalized communities: that their belonging is conditional and their support systems expendable. It also jeopardizes the future of higher education, which depends on our ability to foster diverse learning environments, attract top talent, and prepare students to lead in a complex and interconnected world.

NADOHE stands ready to support institutions committed to diversity, even in the face of political pressure. Now is not the time to step back. We call on all institutions to resist political intimidation and to lead—boldly, ethically, and without compromise.

In solidarity,
Paulette Granberry Russell, J.D.
