On Free Speech

Statement from NADOHE on Free Speech

At this critical moment, we at NADOHE affirm our unwavering support for free speech and every individual’s right to exercise it. Our nation was founded on this principle, and higher education thrives when diverse voices can be heard.

Recent events, from TV network decisions to professionals losing jobs for expressing their personal beliefs on various media, underscore the volatility of today’s climate surrounding individuals exercising their First Amendment rights. Let us be clear: we abhor political violence, as well as calls for violence. We also recognize the difference between political violence and political speech. We believe this moment calls for lifting one another up, not policing each other into silence.

Our nation was built on enshrining the right to freedom of speech. Stifling speech creates an environment of fear and silence. Free speech played a pivotal role in civil rights in America. Listening to the voices of others – even those who criticize majority views – taught us how to challenge injustice, inspired advocacy in organizing, brought diverse communities together, and resulted in changes in laws that safeguard and reinforce civil liberties and protect people from discrimination. These fundamental principles are vital to garnering national and international support, ultimately contributing to significant societal change.

As an organization, NADOHE respects the rights of all to exercise their First Amendment rights, even when such speech risks causing offense or hurt feelings. Everyone should feel free to exercise their right to speak, knowing that their contributions and perspectives are vital and essential to democracy. The way to address speech containing views that one opposes is with expression of that opposition through more speech, not through attempts to silence those who disagree.

In this moment, we must rise above fear and division, standing united in our commitment to free expression, justice, and the dignity of every voice.
